BMW Airhead Seats

First shown as a BMW option on the 1977 BMW R100RS, it is incredibly rare nowadays, despite being available from BMW by special order, albeit at cost of well over £1000 for the complete assembly!. Originally designed by the BMW R90S design master, Hans Muth, it proved a popular option at the time, not only with the R100RS! Stylish and comfortable, offering positive seat positioning for the more sporting rider although not overly popular with pillions despite the euphemistic "Seat an' Half" nickname.

This Sports Solo seat was developed by us with the mission of producing a very accurate replica of the highest quality, in fact better than the original, ditching the metal bases as they rust notoriously. The FlatRacer seat fits on the /7 Series and Mono exactly as per the original, with a seat base made GRP, for corrosion resistance and long working life, finished in semi-gloss black, for that original look, extra strong (5-7mm thick), reinforced with woven roving (similar to yatch construction methods), flexible yet nigh on unbreakable. No more rusty seats!

Fitted with a very precise and accurate replicas of the original seat base, cover and foam, with patterns and dimensions exactly as BMW designed it over 34 years ago. It includes an excellent quality pattern replica of the original rear cowl, made of sturdy GRP (as per the original), finished in glossy white, it includes the hand peg cowls produced exactly in the same dimensions as the originals plus a 70mm BMW logo to complete the original look. The seat base is complete with a pre-fitted original service boolet lid.

Special care was given to the edges and drilling points with each seat assembly indivually checked and finished by hand by us. The tail section is pre-marked for accuracy of cutting and fitting, if hand pegs are required, exactly in the same position as the original BMW cowl. It includes our own upgraded laser cut stainless steel hinges, zinc plated steel locking rod and its conical rubber stop, all the rubber stops fitted on the base plus all the necessary seat fasteners, including those of the cowl, in stainless steel, pre-fitted. All these items are inter changeable with the original seat and cowls. First shown in the 1974 BMW R90S and later adopted by the RS/RT ranges plus all the later /7 series such as S, CS, T etc, it proved to be a very popular option, combining an atractive look with comfort and practicality but unfortunately the seat bases are made of steel that after several wet winters, dissolved to crumbling rust (see side photos) with owners trying to repair it with spot welding and other more unusal methods (ie: bodges) . We never came across a bike with a sound seat!

This pattern seat has been developed by us with the mission of producing a very accurate replica of the highest quality, ditching the metal bases has they rust notoriously. Fits exactly as per the original with a seat base made of sturdy GRP (5-7mm), for corrosion resistance and stenght, finished in semi-gloss black, for that original look, extra strong (5-7mm thick), reinforced with 600gr/m2 woven roving (similar to yatch construction methods), flexible yet nigh on unbreakable. No more rusty seats!

All the captive threaded nuts are present (M5) in order to fit the original or our pattern seat cowl, exactly in the same positions as the original BMW seat. The seat base comes complete with a pre-fitted original owner's /servicing booklet cover, as the original seat. It also includes our own upgraded stainless steel hinges, zinc plated steel locking rod and its conical rubber stop, all the rubber stops fitted on the base plus all the necessary seat fasteners, including those for the cowl, in stainless steel, pre-fitted.

The FlatRacer seat assembly includes a very accurate replica of the original seat cowl, made of sturdy, glossy white GRP (black available as a special request), pre-trimmed and drilled, complete with an original BMW logo and fitted with our own high quality pattern rear luggage rack in black (chrome available at extra cost of £10), complete with all the necessary stainless fasteners and BMW spacers.The seat is also available with a ivory colour seat cover (akin to 1979-80 R100RT) and with plain cover as per the original 1974 R90S seat. Please don't confuse this seat with other patterns on the market, our seat base alone weighs more than double than most pattern seats on the market and the care we lavish in each seat shines through!

Cafe Racer seat, loosely based on the Seventies Seventies Giuliari BMW /7 Sports seat, Very attractive and evocative design, this seat has proved very popular over the years with Cafe Racer enthusiasts. Optimistically designated as a dual seat but really only comfortable for the rider, but you can ride with the occasional pillion, if you know each other very well!
